The Magi become renowned figures, each magical house able to trace their familial origins back to the original "Ascendant Magi."

A half blooded mage is only half as powerful as a full blooded mage. It originated on one of the continents and is passed down through the bloodline. The book begins shortly before the "Third Crusade." The world adapts to this cycle, and soon both sides prepare for two years of Crusade and then ten years of isolation, rebuilding, and preparing. Suddenly the two continents are connected and war and trade begins to flow between them. Hundreds of miles long, and sustained by magic, it is only passable during the Moontide, a two year period that happens every twelve years where the tides of the oceans significantly lower. However, a powerful mage built a bridge that runs along an underwater ridge that connects the two continents. The two continents had very little communication with each other due to the dangerous ocean.
The known world is divided into two major continents that are separated by a sea of churning and tumultuous waters. Here's a brief, spoiler-free background of the novel:
